MISSION STATEMENT

The Douglas County Data Processing Department, in conjunction with the City of Superior Data Processing Department, provides computerized services for the departments in the county and the city.  Departments have direct access to the data with their own pc's.  The computer system provides the county with a means to carry out many tasks that at one time were done manually.  Current computerized applications include accounting, payroll, Register of Deeds, tax collections, imaging, telephone systems, and others.

The Data Processing Department goals are to serve all departments in their computing and telephone needs, help departments meet mandated requirements by use of computing when possible; complete user requests and reports in a timely manner; as well as various programming projects.  Data Processing provides support for over 200 microcomputers.  Data Processing protects user data through frequent backups, offsite storage, etc., and continues to outsource for microcomputer support.

At present the Data Processing Department supports an IBM iSeries 810 computer system, various departmental servers, and Avaya Corporation Definity telephone equipment.  At the present time the county Data Processing staff includes the Director and a MIS analyst, who work closely with the City of Superior Data Processing staff (consisting of three employees), giving a net effect of five Data Processing staff to the county and city.  The Data Processing Department also contracts time from a part-time contracted network engineer.  The Data Processing Department is operated as an Internal Service Fund, with net expenses charged back to user departments.

For many years computer data and systems have been shared between Douglas County and the City of Superior (such as:  the city hosts the Law Enforcement system, the county hosts the tax collection system, both entities use common imaging software and hardware, etc.).  The City of Superior offices are now a part of the county's telephone system, providing efficiencies and lowering overall costs.  There is a continuing effort to eliminate duplicate effort, which will ultimately lead to a combined computer system and network.
