Superior Days

What is Superior Days?

Superior Days is a community-based effort to bring issues of importance to northwestern Wisconsin to the attention of State legislators.

How does it work?

Involvement begins with a series of five planning meetings that lead up to the annual trip to Madison.  Local newspapers announce the date and location of the first meeting each year.  Citizens who have expressed interest in attending Superior Days also receive notice.

Committee structure:

The majority of the planning and preparation for Superior Days activities are completed through the work of the established committees.  The following committees are set up each year and have set agendas that are accomplished by them:

    Issues Identification - Determine legislative-agency agenda;
    Training - Train participants;
    Reception - Share hospitality;
    Invitation - Develop/distribute
    Parade of Products - Feature business/industry;
    Lobbying Teams - Educate legislators;
    Youth - Involve youth; and
    Executive - Policy decisions.

All participants are encouraged to get involved in the process by joining one or more of the committees.

How are the issues determined?

The Issues Committee hosts an "Issues Identification Session" which is announced in the local newspaper and is open to the public.  Utilizing the nominal group process, participants select several key issues that meet established criteria.  The issues identified provide a basis for the legislative issues agenda.  These are the issues the lobbying teams share with legislators while in Madison.

    Agency Issues - Issues that do not require legislative action.  While in Madison, the Superior Days participants meet with all major State Departments to discuss items of importance to northwestern Wisconsin.  Attendance by all participants is vital for support.  Experts provide the needed information and facilitators run the sessions.
    Lobby Groups - All participants are assigned to a lobbying team.  A team coordinator contacts all team members and arranges the legislative meetings.

While in Madison:

Major events include:

    Legislative reception
    Lobbying
    Agency meetings
    Wrap up breakfast

Casual attire is appropriate at all times except for the evening of the reception and while lobbying.  Business attire is recommended for those two activities.

An agenda of activities is distributed each year to provide participants with a guide to follow.

The success of Superior Days is due to the efforts of citizens like you!
